Advocacy & Community Involvement

Advocacy and community involvement skills help students who are blind or visually impaired understand their rights, communicate their needs, and participate actively in school, community, and civic life. Because students often need to advocate for accommodations and accessibility, direct instruction in self-advocacy is essential. Instruction focuses on understanding disability rights, communicating effectively, requesting accommodations, and participating in community and leadership opportunities. Developing these skills empowers students to promote accessibility, build confidence, and take an active role in their education, independence, and future success.
