Assistive technology use and maintenance skills help students who are blind or visually impaired independently manage the devices they rely on for access to information, communication, and learning. Instruction focuses on locating, organizing, caring for, and troubleshooting technology, as well as developing routines for using devices across school, home, and community settings. Students learn practical skills such as charging devices, changing batteries, identifying basic problems, and seeking appropriate support when needed. Strong technology management skills promote independence, confidence, and consistent access to educational materials and daily activities.

Care for Assistive Technology

Students learn how to handle devices safely and prevent damage. Instruction includes proper handling, transportation, and daily care. Access: Care for AT Tools

Store and Retrieve AT

Students learn to store devices in consistent, safe locations and retrieve them independently. Instruction supports organization and responsibility. Access: Store and Retrieve AT

Locating Assistive Technology

Change Batteries

Students learn how and when to change or charge batteries. Instruction focuses on maintaining device readiness and preventing interruptions. Access: Change Batteries

Students learn how to respond calmly and appropriately when devices stop working. Instruction focuses on identifying next steps and alternative strategies.

Troubleshoot AT

Students learn basic troubleshooting strategies, such as checking power, connections, and settings. Instruction helps students resolve simple problems independently.
