Strong auditory and listening skills help students gather information efficiently, follow directions, engage in conversations, and access instructional content. Auditory and listening skills are essential for students who are blind or visually impaired to access information, understand their environment, and participate fully in academic and social settings. Because students may rely more heavily on auditory input, they require direct instruction to develop the ability to attend to sounds, interpret meaning, and retain information presented verbally. Instruction focuses on helping students recognize and interpret environmental sounds, attend to speakers, and develop listening comprehension skills. Students also learn strategies to improve memory, recall, and understanding of spoken information. These skills support academic learning, communication, orientation, and independence.
