Special Education Teacher - CVI Specialist

Qualifications

- Specific knowledge and skills in working with students who have limited functional communication, cognitive, and behavioral challenges.
- A bachelor's or master’s degree in general education or special education
- Certification as a Teacher of the Visually Impaired or Certification in Special Education.
Job Responsibilities
- Possess a true passion for special education and the students that our schools serve.
- Develop and implement IEP goals and objectives designed to meet the individual needs of the students in the classroom.
- Establish and maintain an atmosphere conducive to learning by providing access to a variety of learning materials and teaching strategies to meet the learning needs of students, behaviors, and organizing and effectively structuring learning experiences in the classroom and community settings.
- Demonstrate a clear and deep understanding of disability categories under IDEA and in determining student needs. Ability to apply that understanding in short-term and long-term planning for student learning.
- Apply knowledge of special education procedural requirements; data collection, IEP technical compliance, student progress monitoring, and individual program development.
- Ability to work and communicate effectively with building-level staff and outside agencies. Ability to coordinate multiple paraprofessionals to meet the educational, personal care, and social needs of the students.
- Specific knowledge and skills in working with students who have limited functional communication, cognitive, and behavioral challenges.
Qualifications Specifically for Teacher of Visually Impaired / CVI Specialist
- Knowledge of the EUB Literary Braille Code and the Nemeth Code.
- Familiarity with speech synthesizer software for computer use, knowledge of the operation of the Apex Braille Note Taker Plus and familiarity with Braille embossers.
- Familiarity with low vision devices such as the telescope, CCTV, and handheld video magnifiers.
- Ability to maintain appropriate data collection in order to monitor student progress toward IEP goals.
- Ability to teach the general education curriculum to students with modification for vision loss.
- Ability to determine functional and academic implications of eye reports and implement environmental and academic adaptations accordingly.
- Professional communication with low vision specialists, ophthalmologists, and optometrists.
- Conduct functional visual assessments and write functional vision reports.
- Conduct learning media assessments and write learning media reports.
- Conduct appropriate educational assessments to monitor academic progress.
- Ability to collaborate with the general education classroom teachers in order to facilitate inclusion.
Salary
Teacher roles are full-time, 10-month positions for the 2026-27 school year with a competitive salary and benefits package. Salary is based on Education and experience, with annual base salary starting at $46,500
