It can feel overwhelming to Teachers of Students with Visual Impairments, to think it is your responsibility to ensure all areas of the Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC) are addressed. Keep in mind that not all students will need to be instructed in each area. Additionally, remember that although you are responsible for ensuring all needed areas in the ECC are addressed with each student, YOU don't necessarily need to teach every ECC skill. This is where teamwork is important. This page provides suggestions on orchestrating the ECC.
This page provides suggestions and strategies for organizing and using the TVI's Guide Complete Set including additional printables to help you get organized!
Having students write and read song lyrics is a fun way to build braille literacy for students who love music! I've created these Spotify Playlists to make the incorporation of songs a part of instruction. Of course, these can also just be a fun way to pass time driving between schools! Happy listening!
Multisensory stories are sensory stories for students who are blind or visually impaired you can make yourself. They are short narratives with simple text and image that include interactive sensory elements. Highlight salient features of objects or pictures presented when needed. Be sure to provide the student with multiple exposures to the stories. Sensory stories are also perfect opportunities to work on IEP objectives.
If you have purchased the complete set, you have access to these stories. If you have not purchased the complete set, you have the option to purchase the complete set of Interactive Sensory Stories and Instruction book. You may review and use a complimentary copy of Good Hygiene Interactive Sensory Story.
These interactive matching activities are designed specifically for students who are blind or visually impaired but are appropriate for all students who are working on visual scanning, visual discrimination and eye-hand coordination. Each activity uses the same short rhyming narrative with simple text and images from the Interactive Sensory Stories but made into a matching activity. The activities are created with PowerPoint and pages can be turned with a mouse or touch screen.

I created these interactive choice making activities using the digital APH Lightbox Picture Cards. These activities were made using Microsoft PowerPoint. Each activity uses a simple background and uses actions and slide transitions to make the choice making activities more interesting. You may use these with your students or create your own to meet your student's unique visual needs. Download links are included. Want to make your own activities? I've created a step by step tutorial to help you create your own! Directions are included on this page.
Task boxes are wonderful instructional tools as they provide a clear beginning, middle and end for the student. Add print for print readers and braille for braille readers and it becomes an excellent tool to practice functional braille skills. Job tasks incorporate fine motor skills, activities of daily living and prepare the student for future jobs making these an excellent tool for teaching students who are blind or visually impaired. Job tasks provide the student with an opportunity to practice sorting, assembling, or packaging according to instruction to complete a task, practice skills and transfer skills to new tasks using different materials. This page provides strategies along with instructions and job task printables.
