Interactions & Relationships

Interaction and relationship skills help students who are blind or visually impaired build meaningful connections with others and participate confidently in social environments. These skills support friendship development, respectful communication, and positive interactions with peers and adults. Because students with visual impairments may not have access to visual social cues, direct instruction helps them understand social expectations and develop effective interaction strategies. Instruction focuses on helping students initiate conversations, demonstrate courteous behavior, remember important social information, and participate in group and community interactions. Students learn how to build friendships, expand their social networks, and engage appropriately across a variety of social settings. Developing strong interaction and relationship skills helps students build confidence, form meaningful relationships, and navigate social environments successfully.
