Mobility Skills Development

Mobility skills help students who are blind or visually impaired move safely, efficiently, and confidently within their environments. Because students may not have full access to visual information needed for safe travel, direct instruction focuses on developing movement techniques, spatial awareness, and the use of tactile, auditory, and environmental cues. Students learn skills such as protective techniques, human guide, route travel, and safe navigation in school and community settings. Developing strong mobility skills promotes independence, safety, confidence, and active participation in daily activities.
