Orientation Foundations

Orientation skills help students who are blind or visually impaired understand their surroundings and develop awareness of where they are in relation to objects, people, and places. These foundational skills support safe movement, independence, and confidence in navigating school and community environments. Because students may not have access to visual landmarks, direct instruction helps them build mental maps and understand spatial relationships. Instruction focuses on helping students develop environmental awareness, understand location concepts, and learn how to orient themselves within familiar settings. Students learn to recognize landmarks, follow consistent routes, and understand how environments are organized. These skills provide the foundation for safe and independent travel. Developing strong orientation skills helps students navigate environments confidently and prepares them for more advanced mobility instruction.
