Natural Cues (Least Intrusive)

Natural cues are built into the environment and require no intervention from the teacher. These cues allow the student to respond independently and learn from naturally occurring feedback.
Examples:
  • The ding of a braillewriter signaling the end of the line.
  • The tactile bump at the edge of a desk indicating the workspace boundary.
  • A change in classroom noise indicating peers transitioning between activities.
  • The texture of different measuring cups helping the student identify sizes.
  • A warm dish from the microwave signaling that it’s ready.
Why they matter: Natural cues strengthen independent problem-solving and help students rely on sensory information rather than adults.

Gestural or Sound Cue

Gestural and auditory prompts provide a subtle nudge without telling the student exactly what to do. For students who are blind or visually impaired, cues are often non-visual and rely on sound or subtle tactile signals.
Examples:
  • Lightly tapping the braille paper to indicate where to begin reading.
  • Snapping fingers or tapping a surface to orient the student toward a starting point.
  • Nodding or gesturing for a student with usable vision.
  • Gently ruffling the corner of a tactile graphic to draw attention to a specific area.
Why they matter: These cues promote attention and redirection without interrupting the student’s thought process.

Indirect Verbal Prompt

Indirect verbal prompts encourage the student to think, problem-solve, and initiate the next step. They give hints but do not state the action outright.
​Examples:
  • “Hmm… something seems different on your braillewriter. What do you think needs adjusting?”
  • “What do we usually do before we start writing the next line?”
  • “Is there something you might need to find before moving on?”
Why they matter: Indirect prompts build self-awareness, sequencing skills, and independence. They avoid doing the thinking for the student.

Direct Verbal Prompt

A direct verbal prompt tells the student exactly what to do next. It is more explicit, leaving little room for interpretation.
​Examples:
  • “Turn the page.”
  • “Locate the cane grip and hold it correctly.”
  • “Remove the paper from the braillewriter.”
Why they matter: Direct verbal prompts are useful when students need clarity or when safety or time constraints require immediate action.

Partial Physical Prompt

A partial physical prompt provides gentle tactile guidance while still allowing the student to initiate and complete most of the action.
​Examples:
  • Lightly tapping the student’s elbow to initiate movement.
  • Guiding the student’s hand toward a tool or object but not completing the action for them.
  • Touching the student’s forearm to cue the next step while allowing them to continue independently.
Why they matter: Partial physical prompts help clarify actions but still support autonomy. These should always be used with consent and respect for personal boundaries.

Full Physical Prompt (Most Intrusive)

A full physical prompt involves direct physical assistance. For students who are blind or visually impaired, hand-under-hand is the preferred method when full physical support is required.
Examples:
  • Guiding the student’s hands through the motions of using a cane technique.
  • Helping the student feel how to align a braillewriter’s paper feed.
  • Hand-under-hand modeling of pouring liquid into a measuring cup.
Why they matter: Full physical prompts may be needed for teaching new motor skills or ensuring safety. However, they must be used sparingly to avoid creating dependence or interfering with the student’s sense of control.

Fading Prompts to Build Independence

Prompt fading is essential to prevent prompt dependency. Students must learn to rely on natural cues, problem-solving, and their own sensory skills. 
​Ways to fade prompts:
  • Move from physical to verbal to gestural to natural cues.
  • Increase wait time before giving help.
  • Reduce the frequency or intensity of prompts.
  • Encourage the student to verbalize steps before completing them.
Signs it’s time to fade prompts:
  • Student anticipates the next step.
  • Student initiates the action independently.
  • Student displays confidence or mastery.
  • The student demonstrates frustration with too much assistance.
Effective prompting is an art, one that balances support and independence. When educators use the right level of prompt and fade support thoughtfully, students become more confident, capable, and empowered in their learning. Prompts should always be respectful, intentional, and individualized to meet each student’s unique needs.
