Safety & Emergency Preparedness

Safety and emergency preparedness skills help students who are blind or visually impaired recognize hazards, respond appropriately to emergencies, and protect themselves across home, school, and community environments. Because many safety cues and warning signals are visual, students often benefit from direct instruction in recognizing auditory, tactile, and environmental cues, understanding emergency procedures, and using strategies that promote personal safety. Instruction focuses on identifying risks, following safety plans, communicating during emergencies, and understanding the roles of emergency personnel. Developing these skills promotes confidence, preparedness, independence, and the ability to respond effectively in unexpected situations.
