Why Teach About School Clubs

​Students who are blind or visually impaired may not always be aware of the clubs and organizations available at their school. Without intentional support, they may miss opportunities to participate in activities that match their interests.
Teaching students about school clubs helps them:

  • Explore personal interests and hobbies
  • Develop leadership and teamwork skills

  • Academic clubs. Science or STEM clubs, math clubs, debate, or academic teams
  • Creative clubs. Art or craft clubs, writing or journalism clubs, photography or media clubs
  • Service clubs. Community service organizations, environmental clubs, and volunteer groups
  • Special interest clubs. Chess clubs, technology or coding clubs, cultural or language clubs
Each club offers opportunities for students to explore interests and develop new skills.

Joining and participating in a club may involve several important skills, including:

  • Promote Peer Connections. Encouraging students to attend with friends or classmates may help them feel more comfortable participating.

Students should also learn practical habits related to club participation. Instruction may include:

  • Traveling safely to club locations within the school
These habits help students participate confidently and independently.
