Self Concept & Identity

Self-concept and identity skills help students who are blind or visually impaired develop a positive understanding of themselves, their abilities, and their unique characteristics. Because students may have different experiences related to their visual impairment, direct instruction can support self-acceptance, confidence, and emotional well-being. Instruction focuses on recognizing strengths, understanding personal qualities, developing a positive self-image, and appreciating individual differences. A strong sense of self helps students build resilience, advocate for their needs, and participate confidently in academic, social, and community environments.
