​Encourage the student to develop their listening skills for literacy activities by helping them: attend to a story read or listening to a story on tape; recall details from a listening experience; sequence events from a listening experience; identify main idea from a listening experience; and summarize a story read or on tape. 10 Phonetically Based Braille Activities

​Tactual exploration and discrimination skills are necessary for future braille readers but are also helpful for all students in order to help learn to discriminate objects by touch to help make sense of the world. Unlike braille instruction for former print readers or those who are learning braille as a secondary reading mode, braille instruction for children with who learning to read with braille as their primary medium must incorporate more than just the braille code. Instruction must include the fundamental skills of reading and writing. Instruction must incorporate listening skills, phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary development, comprehension and fluency. To minimize these restrictions, students need concrete and unifying experiences and need to be a part of the action by “doing”.
