Evelyn Jane Short Stories
This collection of 39 short stories features the main character, Evelyn Jane. She is happy, and friendly, finds joy in life, and happens to be blind. Each story is short and between 410L-600L Lexile Level. This is comparable to first and second-grade reading levels. The stories are descriptive and unlike similar books at this reading level, are not dependent on pictures. The stories were inspired by one of my braille students and dedicated in loving memory of my mother, Evelyn Jane. As a companion to the TVI’s Guide to the ECC, the worksheets correspond to the ECC Thematic units presented in the curriculum guide.
Each story features a print copy for the student that is followed by 10 comprehension questions. The passages are short and can be brailled for students on a traditional Perkins braillewriter or copied and pasted into braille translation software and embossed for the braille reader. The stories are print-on-demand. Each story includes data collection worksheets in print and simulated braille. This allows the instructor to document decoding errors and braille code errors separately.
In addition to the pdf file, I have included a Word document that can be customized with your student's name. Reading stories with their name can be highly motivating to students. Following the reading of the story, encourage the student to reflect on the story. Prompt the student to rewrite the story, making any changes so the story reflects their preferences and interests. When they have finished, have the student read back their writing.
