The following apps can assist users who are blind or visually impaired with assistance in navigation and travel.
AbleRoad app
Free. AbleRoad lets you locate, rate and review accessible places. You can find nearby restaurants, stores, hotels, groceries, salons, theaters, and more. 

Ariadne GPS app
$5.99 The Ariadne GPS app offers the possibility to know your position and to get information about the street, number, etc. as well as lets you explore the map of what is around you. When VoiceOver is activated, you can drag your finger over the screen to identify streets and numbers around you!

AroundMe app
Free. AroundMe allows you to quickly find out information about your position and allows you to choose the nearest businesses in proximity to where you are.

BindSquare app
$23.99 BlindSquare allows you to sense what is around you. It uses GPS and the compass to locate you. It then gathers information about the surrounding environment from FourSquare. 

Curb app
Free. The Curb (formerly Taxi Magic) app allows you to book a ride to your location in three taps of your iPhone. Use the app to track a nearby taxi as it arrives. 

iMove app
Free. The iMove app supports independent mobility for people who are visually impaired. It tells the address, points of interests and features customized messages. 

Seeing Assistant Move Lite app
Free. The Seeing Assistant - Move LITE app is a free version offering route planning, advanced neighborhood scanner, searching for location, where am I functionality, route recorder, sharing points, text to voice and dropbox integration.

Seeing Assitant Move app
$7.99. The Seeing Assistant - Move app provides advanced geo-location and navigation features as well as current weather reports. Features include route planning, advanced neighborhood scanner, searching for location, where am I functionality, route recorder, sharing points, text to voice and dropbox integration.

Seeing Eye GPS app
Free. The Seeing Eye GPS app is a fully accessible turn-by-turn GPS iPhone app with all the normal navigation features plus features unique to people who are blind. 

Yellow Pages app
Free Yellow Pages allows you to search via voice for a business or person nearby. Once located, the number and information can either be added to your contacts or called directly.

Sendero GPS Look Around app
Free Sendero GPS Look Around for the iPhone, with Voice Over, announces the current street, city, cross street, heading and nearby points of interest. Unlike Sendero's other applications, there is no turn-by-turn navigation on the iPhone yet.

Selecting the Right AT for Students who are Blind or Visually Impaired Recorded Presentation

Are you overwhelmed by the process of selecting assistive technology for your students? This presentation will encompass the process and steps of selecting the right assistive technology for students who are blind or visually impaired using the SETT framework. Key points covered in this presentation include identification of the current problem; consideration of current skills; understanding unique visual and learning needs; awareness of AT for VI; AT equipment considerations; the process of building a toolkit; instructional strategies; and next steps. 


Objectives:


  • Identify required steps in conducting an AT evaluation for students with visual impairments.
  • Analyze student’s current skills and unique needs to make appropriate AT recommendations
  • Develop strategies for selecting low, mid and high tech Assistive Technology
