For those students who prefer Android devices, I have begun a list of Android apps. Please let me know if there are apps not listed here that you feel would be beneficial for students who are blind or visually impaired.

Free Chime is a clock app that provides the option to chime on the quarter, half or hour and there are different alerts to choose from.
Free. Dropbox allows the user to bring photos, docs, and videos anywhere after saving it to the computer.
Font Installer allows users to install over hundreds of fonts to their device for better reading.
Free. Google Drive allows the user to upload photos, videos, documents, and other files and access them on the go. Files are available off line. Scan documents with device camera. Up to 15 GB of storage.
Free. Google Goggles allows the user to take a picture at a painting, famous landmark, barcode, or QR code, a product or a popular image in order to identify it using Goggles database.
Free. GoRead is an accessible e-book reader for people with print disabilities. Access and download books directly from Bookshare. Read with voiced navigation and text-to-speech. Read books in DAISY 3 text and EPUB 2 formats.
Free. GuideDroid is a fully-accessible, mainstream GPS application. It provides walking, biking, driving, and transit directions. Walking directions shows users where they are as they walk, and continually announces street addresses near their current walking location.
IVONA Text-to-Speech This app replaces the synthesized text-to-speech voice with a more natural sounding voice.
Magnify allows the user to turn the Android phone into a digital magnifying glass with built-in flashlight.
MessagEase Keyboard allows users to type by using only one hand or just one finger. The keyboard features large letters that can easily be seen.
Free. Qwerty6 Keyboard for Android. This app features big keys and characters and is easy to learn. To type the large letter, touch the key. To type the upper letter, swipe up and to type the lower letter, swipe down.
The ScanLife QR & Barcode Reader This app allows users to read barcodes in order to identify products.
SVOX is the Classic Text to Speech Engine allows users to read out aloud their texts, e-books, translations, and even navigation. It features voice support in key areas like navigation, and can read an e-book or PDF document.
TalkBack is an app that adds spoken, audible, and vibration feedback to the device.
Free. TripitTravel Organizer allows the user to organize travel plans in one place. It allows user to get directions, maps, and weather for each destination.
Free. Tunein Radio allows the user to listen to the world's radio with music, sports, news, talk, and comedy streaming.
Visually Impaired (Read Aloud) allows users to read aloud news, magazines and blogs websites.
